How Casino Comps Work
The word comp is short for complimentary. Comps are freebies that the casino gives to its customers as a reward for their business. It is a way to promote good will and to entice player loyalty to the establishment. The comp game is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the casino experience.
Comps are for those who give the casino a shot at their gambling bankroll; don’t expect them for sightseeing. Match your comp expectations with your play. The comp system is multi-tiered, based mainly on the amount of money you put through the machine. In Vegas, the casinos have to work hard to entice you to stay and play at their casino. Comps are the casino’s way of thanking you for your business in hopes of keeping you around for a long time. Casinos that don’t rate well in the comps department usually struggle to obtain loyal customers.
Many players are under the impression that comps are only for the high rollers who spend thousands of dollars each visit. But this is not true. There are different levels of comps depending on the amount of play you give the casinos but most players can usually get something in return for their play. Comps can range from free hats and pens given out as promotions to the ultimate comp of free food, room and beverage (RFB). Free drinks are the universal comp that is given to all players. Most casino will serve you free drinks while you are playing at the slots or table games. Casino rate is another comp that is fairly easy to obtain. The casinos like you staying and playing at their establishment, so in return they are willing to give you a discount on the room rate. If you play enough you can get a full room comp. A buffet or coffee shop comp is also fairly easy to obtain in most places.
In order to qualify for comps you need to do two things. First of all you have to get your play rated. This means signing up for the player's club and using you card whenever you play the machines. When you play table games you have to ask the pit boss to rate your play. The second thing you must do when looking for a comp is ASK. No one will come up to you and ask if you are hungry and would like a free meal. You will have to ask for what you want. If your play qualifies for the comp you are looking for you will get it. If not you are told you don't have enough play you can then inquire as to how much play is required for the comp you are seeking.
If you are looking for a food comp it is best to do this while you are playing. If you are playing the machines you will need to speak to a casino host. You can tell one of the slot attendants that you would like to speak to a casino host and ask them to page one for you. If you are playing the tables you can ask the pit boss.
For a room comp you will want to speak to a casino host before you check out. If you don't have a casino host, you can call the hotel operator and as to be connected with one. Tell them you are getting ready to check out and would like to know if you qualify for and reduction in your room rate. Many people don't bother doing this because they don't think they had enough play to qualify for a free room or reduced rate. You may find that you have more play than you figured but you won't know until you ask. Although you can do this at check out, I find it better to introduce myself to a host shortly after I check in. This way they can help you along the way and even tell you how much play is required for a food or room comp.
The most important thing to remember when trying to obtain a comp is that you have to ask. Just be sure that you ask politely. Never demand a comp and please remember to thank the person who gave you the comp. A simple thank you goes a long way.
